 Baikal Amur Mainline (BAM) Line Route



The BAM was built as a strategic alternative route to the Trans-Siberian Railway, especially along the vulnerable sections close to the border with China. The BAM's costs were estimated at $14 billion, and it was built with special, durable tracks since much of it was built over permafrost. Due to the severe terrain, weather, length and cost Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev described BAM as "the construction project of the century. The route of the present-day BAM first came under consideration in the 1880s as an option for the eastern section of the planned Trans-Siberian railway. In the 1930s labor-camp inmates, in particular from the Bamlag camp of the Gulag system, built the section from Tayshet to Bratsk. In September 1984, a "golden spike" was hammered into place, connecting the eastern and western sections of the BAM. wikipedia

The newest and northernmost line From Tayshet to remote Sovetskaya Gavan ( Сове́тская Га́вань ) a port on the Strait of Tartary, most of it built in 1944-1946, mainly by gulag prisoners, including German and Japanese prisoners of war . This line passes the northern Lake Baikal town of Severobaikalsk . Close to the end of the line, you can take a ferry from the port city of Vanino to Sakhalin Island ( 16 hours ). Check to see if you can continue onward to Japan .

 The geographical scope of the movie is the whole Baikal Lake basin that extends to two countries, Russia and Mongolia, and encompasses waste territories with rivers bringing waters to the lake. The Baikal Lake Basin is home to several architectural and natural landmarks, as well as rare scientific artifacts. The main message of the documentary is to make the global community aware of the problems that the Baikal Lake Basin is facing and the need to preserve it as a unique natural, ecological and social and cultural phenomenon.

 Conquering Permafrost: People of BAM Railway (RT Documentary)

 The Baikal-Amur Mainline stretches more than four thousand kilometers, making it one of the world's longest railways. Construction work on it lasted for almost a hundred years. The incredibly harsh weather conditions could not stop progress on the line. Even though the BAM lost its funding after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many people who had taken part in making it decided to stay in the towns and villages that were built to house workers. Today some of these folk have even their own businesses. One such person is a hairdresser, who travels from town-to-town on the railway, and her number of clients would make a big city salon green with envy.
